Do preborn babies go to heaven?
Most Christians believe their hope is well-founded that babies who die before birth will experience God's love after death.
The 1993 Catechism of the Catholic Church states: 'As regards children who have died without Baptism, the Church can only entrust them to the mercy of God, as she does in her funeral rites for them. Indeed, the great mercy of God who desires that all men should be saved, and Jesus' tenderness toward children, which caused him to say: "Let the children come to me, do not hinder them," (Mk 10:14) allow us to hope that there is a way of salvation for children who have died without Baptism.' (CCC, 1261)
Historically, Catholic theology included teachings on "limbo," a place of natural happiness where children who died before birth or baptism would go, though without experiencing the "beatific vision" of God. However, this theory was never dogmatized.
Regardless, many Christians hold the belief that unborn children are received into heaven on account of God's grace and infinite love. This perspective offers comfort and hope to many believers who have experienced the loss of an unborn child.
